In the 100 years since the founding of the Commission on Cancer (CoC), surgical oncology has evolved significantly and has been largely driven by research and the advancement of technology. The sheer breadth of oncologic surgeries—including both basic and complex procedures involving a large number of organ sites from brain to bone—make even a cursory review impossible within the scope of a single article.

Benjamin Franklin Byrd, Jr., MD, FACS, served as Chair of the Commission on Cancer from 1969 to 1975 and as a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons from 1973 to 1976.

Burton James Lee was born in New Haven, CT, on February 4, 1874. He received a bachelor’s of philosophy from Yale University in 1894 and his medical degree from Columbia University in 1898, and interned at Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

Andrew Mayer, MD, FACS, administered the work of the Commission on Cancer (CoC) from October 1963 to February 1966, in his role as Assistant of Professional Activities for the American College of Surgeons.
