As one of the first National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, Roswell Park uses the Commission on Cancer (CoC) standards as a foundation for quality assessment. It codifies the things that we already do and provides us the opportunity to demonstrate the quality of our comprehensive cancer care to stakeholders including our payers. Our participation in the CoC and contribution of our data to the National Cancer Database (NCDB) allows us to measure and benchmark the cancer care we provide and the outcomes we achieve. In addition, the registry remains the core of our research data systems to support translational research efforts. In the last decade, Roswell Park researchers have made major scientific contributions using the CoC data through access to the NCDB Participant User Files (PUF), to better understand cancer treatment and outcomes.
Accreditation by the CoC is another mechanism we use to ensure that we meet certain standards and to validate our investment in comprehensive, multidisciplinary care from genetics and prevention services to palliative care and long-term survivorship. A recent example is the utilization of structured data in the cancer registry to populate the treatment summary component of survivorship care plans. The quality metrics and data collection allow our clinical teams to continually assess our treatment practices and cancer control, aim for even higher levels of cancer care and better outcomes for our patients, and ensure full consistency and high quality.
The CoC has set the foundational standards for 100 years. As the oldest cancer research center in America, we are especially proud that we were among the inaugural centers to receive CoC accreditation and have maintained the accreditation ever since. Congratulations to those who built and grew the CoC this last century. Their legacy has benefitted millions of people across the country and around the world and bolstered our work here in Western New York.
