The Commission on Cancer (CoC) provides us with a framework to ensure we have certain programs and processes in place that are necessary for high-quality care. Additionally, the requirement to participate in the cancer registry provides us with the opportunity to contribute back to the national data registry in supporting overall oncology research to address important issues in oncological care. The registry also serves as a tool that offers lifelong patient follow-up.
As a CoC-accredited institution, we must meet specific patient safety and quality standards to ensure we are providing high-quality care, while simultaneously looking for ways to improve our processes. Our patients, their families, and communities have peace of mind in knowing that we are held to high standards and meet those standards. CoC also challenges us to expand and develop some of our oncology programs. For example, our survivorship program started out as a singular pilot plan and is transitioning to a comprehensive survivorship program as we align it with CoC’s requirements.
In addition to setting standards, CoC provides helpful information about clinical trials, new treatment options, cancer education, and support services. These resources are extremely beneficial in improving patient engagement and outcomes.
