Accredited since 1936
Iowa City, IA
The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has been accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) since 1936. Over the years, CoC standards have changed from structure-defining standards to quality standards. CoC accreditation serves as a framework for improving patient care and helps staff to advocate for resources for the cancer program. The change in the standards drives the focus on the quality of the care delivered at the cancer center. Staff use CoC standards as a guide to engage multiple disciplines to create a more patient centered program.
The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has a strong connection to the CoC. Members of the program have been Iowa CoC State Chairs, with the last two chairs receiving awards for outstanding performance. Program leaders also have served as CoC representatives for the American College of Surgeons Fellowship. The program believes that supporting accreditation for other institutions in the state results in better quality of cancer care for patients throughout Iowa.
